Social Media and English Learning

In an age where technology is evolving at unprecedented levels, learning English has never been more accessible. We have many tools at our disposal that can help us achieve our goals faster and more effectively, one such tool is social media. It has become a part of our everyday life, whether we like it or not, so why not use it to our advantage.

The best way to learn any language is to constantly interact with it and social media can help you do just that. Social is the key word here and it’s what we want to do, be more social, but all this through a mutual language. Since English is the lingua franca, billions of people speak it with hundreds of millions being native speakers. Mostly all of them use social media, so your pool of interactions is limitless. There are many social media platforms available, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest.

The first thing you should do on your social media accounts is to switch the language over to English. This might seem a bit of a hurdle in the beginning because you aren’t used to the terminology, but trust me, it’s just a matter of time before you get used to it and then you won’t want to switch back. In order to change the language to English you should go to your accounts’ setting page and find the language page. From there just change it to English.

Facebook is the most popular social media out there and almost anyone who has access to the internet has a Facebook account. It’s the perfect place to meet native speakers or people who know excellent English and start chatting. One of the best ways to meet people is by joining a Facebook group. There are millions of groups on the platform, which you can be part of. I would recommend joining groups that have to do with areas you enjoy and of course English learning groups. There, you will meet people who want to learn English too and people who will help you out with your goal of learning English; but most importantly you will make friends.

Twitter is another popular social media platform you can use to enhance your English learning skills. Like Facebook, you can follow people and pages that interest you. Make sure you leave a like or a retweet and try to engage with their posts. A simple, ‘What a great post!’ comment can help start a conversation. There are millions of tweets every hour, so I’m sure you will find many interesting topics.

Instagram, a social media platform focused on pictures, has become very popular over the last few years with many people using it more frequently and choosing it over others. Although, it’s not the best media to use for enhancing your English skills due to it being heavily picture oriented, you can still engage in posts. You can make it a habit of yours to comment on pictures you like, and you can also add a small comment as to why you liked it so much.

I am sure you will find many more ways on your own to use social media to benefit your English learning, though I hope this small guide has helped you get started on your journey.
