Tips for Learning English

Do you really want to learn English?
The first tip I will give is that you must be a hundred percent sure you really want to learn English. This is very important as it’s a commitment that takes time and effort, and if it’s not something you’ll be committed to there’s a high chance you’ll give up shortly after. So, make sure you’ve thought this through.

Motivation and goals
What motivates you to want to learn English? Identifying this will help keep you on the right track when things become more demanding. Learning a second language can be an exciting experience but can very quickly become difficult. Students who can honestly answer questions such as ‘Why do I want to learn English, and why do I want to improve it?’ will not easily give up.

Having goals will also help keep you motivated. Students want to learn English, so they can go to a University. Some people need it for a job or to get a better position to their current one. Others to move to another country or to just learn another language. There are many reasons and numerous goals you can set for yourself.

Practice and expose yourself to English as much as possible
I can’t stress how important this is. As in everything you do, the more you practice the better you become, this of course applies to language learning. The best things you can do other than joining a class and studying is to read literature, articles, watch the news, a TV series, films, listen to songs or audio books, or if you’re into gaming, play one rich in story and dialogue. There are a ton of fun things you can do to practice and expose yourself to English.

The importance of vocabulary
Vocabulary is key to your success in learning a language. Having a wider vocabulary will help you reach your goals in learning a language much faster. You can do this by reading (as mentioned above), but there are other ways. You can use a thesaurus, you can utilize this tool and find synonyms of words that you use a lot. This way you can start experimenting with different words when you write. Another thing you can do is to keep a journal. Look up new words in a dictionary and write them down. Every second or third day go over the new words you wrote and try and learn them!

Meet new people and speak English
Another great way to help you improve your English is to make friends who speak English! We live in an age where social media have made meeting people from all around the world very easy. Look online for various such groups and join them, there are many people who will be looking for someone like you!

Enjoy the journey
Finally, the most important tip I can give you is to enjoy yourself. Learning a language is a personal journey where one can discover different aspects of their personality and find parts of themselves they didn’t know existed before. You will be able to communicate with a different culture and this will open new opportunities in life. So, enjoy it!
